Long before the Gardens of Three Rivers welcomed its first resident, this land was a working family farm. Cows grazed these fields, children grew up doing chores in its barns, and neighbors were always welcome at the kitchen table. Today, the Beal family is carrying that legacy forward by building a place where the next generation of Three Rivers families can be cared for, just as this land once cared for them.
From Hingham to the Heartland
The Beal family story in America began in 1638, when family members sailed from Hingham, England, aboard a ship called the Diligent. More than two centuries later, in the 1850s, some of their descendants settled in Michigan. The family has called this state home ever since.
A Milk Tester Finds His Way
Larenzo Charles Beal, known to everyone as “Charles,” grew up in Lenawee County as the oldest of twelve children. After finishing a Short Course at Michigan State College, he went to work for the County Extension Department as a milk tester.
The work was personal and hands-on. Charles traveled from farm to farm, sampled each cow’s milk in the evening, stayed the night with the farm family, and sampled again in the morning. He then recorded each cow’s milk weight and butterfat percentage so farmers could make good decisions about their herds. Every animal was measured on its own, and every family counted on his care and accuracy.
On one of those visits he met Mary, a red-headed farmer’s daughter on the Gleason Farm near Three Rivers. Charles fell in love, and in 1935 he and Mary Gleason were married.
Planting Roots in Three Rivers
In 1945, Lorenzo and Mary bought this farmland and started a dairy operation of their own. They raised four children there: Mary Lou Beal (Borgert), Allen Beal, Tom Beal, and Connie Beal (Luegge).
The Next Generation Comes Home
In 1966, Tom Beal married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Kipker. Tom studied Agricultural Engineering at MSU, and the couple moved to Pennsylvania, where he worked for the New Holland Machine Company. Their first son, Christopher, was born there in 1973.
In 1975, shortly before Tom and Marilyn’s second son, Shaun, was born, Charles called Tom to say he was ready to retire. He asked whether Tom would like to come back to the farm. Tom and Marilyn wanted to raise their family on the land where Tom grew up, so they returned to Three Rivers. Together with Tom’s brother Allen and his wife, Julie (Brown) Beal, they bought the farm from Charles and Mary.
The two families ran the dairy farm together until 1986.
A New Season on Familiar Ground
The Beal family has always believed in giving back to the community that shaped them. Wanting to leave a lasting legacy in Three Rivers, Dr. Christopher Beal, his wife Lisa, and their daughter Anna Joy are leading the development of The Gardens of Three Rivers.
The values that guided the farm are the ones that guide us now. We look after each person as an individual. We treat hard work as a way of caring for others. And we open our doors the way farm families once opened their homes to a traveling milk tester. The land has changed, but its purpose hasn’t. It’s still a place where people are known, cared for, and made to feel at home.

She is dedicated to cultivating a safe, engaging, and high-quality experience that consistently prioritizes the health, happiness, and overall well-being of our incredible residents. She also serves as the central liaison for staff, families, and local partners to foster a cohesive culture of compassionate care and service excellence.
